Thoughts about the supposed literacy crisis in the United States

Has anyone considered the amount of students in schools where English is not their first language? Or the children of parents where English is not their first language?

Has anyone considered that social media has connected us will people around the world where English is not many people’s first language.

Even people whose first language is English will be impacted by the people they interact with that may struggle with understanding the language and its nuances.

Of all the English speakers in world what portion is English not their first language. Which portion is it their first language but not their childhood caretakers first language?

These are some of my questions that changes the literacy discourse besides blaming the generations and social media. At least it adds more nuance about some of the ramifications of social media.
